An engraved inscription on the underside of the teapot reads: 'PRESENTED BY / 1910 / HANKOW WATER Co / to / R. St. GEORGE MOORE. M.I.C.E.' The civil engineer Richard St. George Moore, who was born about 1859, is probably best remembered for having designed the Palace Pier at Brighton, which was begun in 1891, opened in 1898 and completed in 1901. He worked for some time in China and was also responsible for the Solent Lighthouse off the east coast of the Isle of Wight (1920). His report on the Hankow Waterworks, written in 1909, is in the Archives of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ref. O.C/3853). St. George Moore is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery.
