The arms are those of Rothschild impaling Rothschild for Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808-1879) who in 1836 married his cousin, Baroness Charlotte von Rothschild (1819-1884), daughter of Baron Carl Mayer Rothschild of the Rothschild banking family of Naples.

Rothschild became the first Jewish Member of Parliament, taking his seat on 26 July 1858. He was returned to Parliament in the general elections of 1859, 1865 and 1869. In private life his passion was for horse racing and with his colt Sir Bevys he won the 1879 Derby at Epsom.
