The parcel gilding in three-colour cold, the shaped cylindrical bodies rising from cast formal foliage bases and richly chased with friezes of formally arranged primroses and forget-me-nots against granulated grounds, all engraved with a presentation inscription, gilt interiors
Height of ewer 11 ¼ in, 28.5 cm, stamped: '806', height of beakers 4 ½ in, 11.4 cm, stamped respectively: '436' and '438'

The inscriptions read: 'Presented / to / Sir W.G. Anderson K.C.B. / in recognition of / valuable services to his family / by / John  Evelyn Gladstone. / 1880.'

Sir William George Anderson was born in London in 1804. His first employment was in the Navy Office and then from 1825 to 1867, in the Paymaster General's Office. He afterwards became assistant controller and auditor general of the Exchequer and Audit Department, a position he held until retiring in December 1872. He was created a K.C.B. for his long work in the Civil Service and died at his residence, Anglesey House, Forest Hill, south London, on 29 August 1897.

John Evelyn Gladstone, only son of Captain J.N. Gladstone, R.N. (third son of Sir John Gladstone 1st Bt., who was an elder brother of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone), was born on 23 November 1855. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He became Sir John Evelyn Gladstone 4th Bt of Fasque and Balfour, co. Kincardine, upon the death of his cousin in 1926. Sir John died at his family seat, Bowden Park, Chippenham, Wiltshire, on 12 February 1945.
